The Gospel according to St Mark: An Introduction and Commentary (Cambridge Greek Testament Commentaries)From Cambridge University Press

The last fifty years have seen a shift of emphasis in New Testament scholarship. When the task was to establish the text and to discuss the authenticity of the documents, linguistic and historical considerations came first. Now that these things are approaching a settled state it has become possible, and necessary, to give more attention to the theological and religious content of the New Testament. Hence the New Testament is re-examined by scholars in this new series. Each volume takes a book of the New Testament and, after an introduction on general matters, goes through the text in great detail, commenting especially on theological matters, relating the contents to the life and worship of the early Christian communities. It is assumed that students have their own Greek text beside the open commentary. The text on which the commentary is based is the Kilpatrick-Nestle edition.

'a distinguished and judicious commentator'
By lionintheorchard
I encountered the name of Charles Cranfield when I read a review of his commentary on Romans 1-8. The reviewer remarked on this judicious and learned commentator, which is a good description. While one's theological views may differ from Mr. Cranfield, it would have been a very fine thing to have him for a teacher. He investigates the possible ways to understand the text of Mark, and gives you his view, after going over the textual passage. One good example of the teacher at work is in the 4th chapter of Mark, in verses 10-12. (to you is made known the mystery of the kingdom). He remarks that it was thought that this made reference to the mystery religions. However, Mr. Cranfield goes through the use of the word mysterion, or its lack of use in the LXX, and then its appearance in Jewish literature(including in the later Greek OTs) after a time. The word seems to have gained some currency in Jewish use by the time of the NT. He gets to what I think is the point of things in this portion of his commentary, telling us what is the mystery of the kingdom of God? It is that the kingdom has come in Jesus, but it is veiled, so that one must look and seek. It was not apparent to so many back then, but for those who sensed something about Jesus, and who sought after Him, he was made known to them.

Then in the next couple of pages this teacher goes to work looking at the Greek terms ina, and mepote. This book is just what the doctor ordered for one who has had a year of Greek, and is in need of tutoring as he continues to read and learn of Greek. He patiently goes through the possible ways of understanding the text.

Another very good thing about Cranfield is that he reads and learns from the Church fathers, and from Byzantine as well as Latin commentators. Further, he looks at the textual variants, which few commentators do any more(or so it seems to me, Lord have mercy and let me not speak wrongly). Frederick Danker one time commented on the want of looking at variants in the texts. I like commentaries which do this, over the composite text( usually the Nestle Aland). Whereas, like the older commentators, Cranfield looks at the readings(or words) given by various NT texts(Sin., A, B, D etc.) I know that many of these readings are in the Aland text, but not always are commentators commenting on this in their commentaries. Well, that is how it seems to me anyway.

This is a commentary for one who reads the Greek text, and has it sitting right nearby. You will need that, as while he has portions of the verses, this book does not have the whole Greek text or its translation in the book.

The book follows the basic format of the old Cambridge commentary on the Greek New Testament, a series that had many good pithy remarks, especially on the Greek text. The old series had good remarks on the theological message, but this newer series(which never was completed, it only has two books of the NT covered, so far as I know, Mark and Colossians, by C. F. D. Moule) seems to be stronger on the theological message.

This commentary on Mark, with those by Richard France(the NIGTC) and William Lane( NICNT) are the three I like best, although there are many more fine books.
