A teen with big dreams of making it in radio, struggles to hold her family together while dealing with her brother's epilepsy, her mother's alcoholism, and her own broken heart.
Sometimes hope is the most extraordinary gift of all.
High-school radio host Jasmine Torres's life is full of family dysfunction, but if she can score the internship of her dreams with a New York City radio station, she knows she can turn things around.
That is, until her brother Danny's latest seizure forces her to miss the interview, and she's back to the endless loop of missing school for his doctor appointments, picking up the pieces of her mother's booze-soaked life, and stressing about Danny's future.
Then she meets Wes. He's the perfect combination of smart, cute, and funny. He also happens to have epilepsy like her brother. Wes is living a normal life despite his medical issues, which gives Jasmine hope for Danny. But memories of her cheating ex-boyfriend keep Jasmine from going on a real date with Wes, no matter how many times he asks her.
Jasmine can't control everything, not who wins the internship, not her mother's addiction, not her brother's health, not even where her heart will lead her. She wishes she could just have an ordinary life, but Jasmine may just discover that what she already has is pretty extraordinary after all.

Review
"The relationship between Jasmine and her little brother, Danny, will break your heart and put it back together again."- Rachael Allen, author of 17 First Kisses and The Revenge Playbook.
"I adore This Ordinary Life! It has so much heart and soul, it's like I walked into Jasmine's life and left on the last page knowing her. The radio show premise is new and fresh. This book has everything: a main character to root for, a little brother you want to take into your arms and hug, and a romance that's swoon-worthy. If ever there was a boy in a YA book I'd want my own daughter to date, it's Wes!"- Jaime Blair, author of Leap of Faith and Lost to Me
"This Ordinary Life rises well above the ordinary; while the romance is swoon-worthy, it is the love between Jasmine and her little brother that makes the book so vibrant and harrowingly real."- Tracy Banghart, author of the Rebel Wing series

Well-paced novel with believable, endearing characters
By Laurel Klein
Walkup has a knack for strong, likable characters, particularly evident in Jasmine, Wes, Frankie, and Danny.
Highlights:
I fell in love with Jasmine's sense of self--she is a teen with strong ethics and self-respect that shine through in all areas of her life. She is honest, goal-driven, kind, responsible, tough, and funny--a well-developed character who models a complex strength in what can only be defined as Ordinary Life. Considering how infrequently the term "strong female character" is attached to women who *aren't* stepping into traditionally male booty-kicking roles, it's fantastic to see Walkup highlighting a kind of strength that doesn't require any hand-to-hand combat. :)
Jasmine's relationship with Wes, a boy who--like her younger brother--has epilepsy, is both a sweet romance (with one of the better first dates in YA) and rich ground for exploring Jasmine's fears and hopes for her brother as he grows up. And Jasmine's brother, Danny, and her best friend, Frankie, are utterly adorable. They, even more than Wes, show the reader how deeply Jasmine is loved.
The only note that didn't ring entirely true for me was her mom's character arc. Although I wanted everything to be wrapped up well for Jasmine and her family, the transformation felt a little too easy for me, a concern teen readers may or may not share.
Overall, a great read that tackles big topics and difficult situations with humor and characters you will root for. With the resilience and optimism shown in this novel, Jasmine more than earns the nickname Wes gives her.

Extraordinary!
By Anila Hoxha
*This book was given in the exchange of an honest review.*
“This Ordinary Life” explores the story of a teenager, Jasmine, who dreams to be a DJ, but she is the one who takes care of her little brother, who has constant seizures. You know I do not like these kind of books that much, since I’m mostly attracted to horror, but this is a must read. Hands down!
The author has really simple writing style which makes the book flow very well. Also it features alcohol addiction, epilepsy, relationships, family crisis. What I liked mostly is that it gives you a fresh perspective on things, but also it makes you realize that sometimes we need to hope. A lot of readers would consider this book too good to be real, but, in contrary, I think this book is more than just a “teenage love story”. That’s what I liked most about it!
When it comes to Jennifer Walkup talking about epilepsy, it comes in such a natural way, that it doesn’t make a taboo subject. The book shows you both sides of having epilepsy. It doesn’t mean that you cannot live a normal life. The character of Wes gives you hope, and it makes you see life differently. You learn to love this character, and to admire his strength.
I would strongly recommend it! It is a fresh book and easy to read.

So Much Amazing Feels!
By Tequila Rose
I really enjoyed reading this book. Even though it was a quick read(spent this afternoon reading it), there's a lot of amazing feels in the book. There was one point though, where I was afraid I was going to hate the entire book, but thankfully the author didn't go that way because I really didn't want to hate this book. I can tell this book is a work and love of passion for the author...her passion is seen on the pages through the characters in the book and that is the biggest reason I found myself really enjoying the story.
