an Enid Blyton fan

This is the first book in the Secret series and the most exciting one of them. It's about four children who run away from home. They set sail to an island nearby to hide out. Even bringing along with them a cow and some chickens. What makes this book so fun to read is how they were able to survive on this island. There are descriptions of caves with secret entrances, wild berries to pluck and eat, a club house made completely from interwoven willow trees, cooking and eating at a campsite, hiding from the grownups that are looking for them to drag them back to their mean aunt and uncle. A dreamy whole summer until it starts getting cold. The story does end with the desired happily every after and the promise of more adventures to come.

How can a children's book be so gripping? (living book)

I started reading my 7 year old daughter's books, primarily to stimulate our conversations, and found myself very keen to keep on reading this particular story late into the night!

Having read many of her Enid Blyton books now (which have almost all been very good), this remains the best so far.

In brief, 3 children find themselves in the care of their Aunt and Uncle when their parents go missing on a long flight in a small plane. The Aunt and Uncle start out quite nice, until everyone starts to believe that the children's parents have died.

Their Aunt and Uncle start to treat them so badly, that they want to run away, but are scared about what might happen when they eventually have to return. An older child they are friends with helps them to run away to a secret island in the middle of the lake, to start a new life all by themselves.

This tale is exciting, funny and educational. The young run-aways learn how very hard it is to make their own living, the importance of work and helping each other, and how careful they have to be with food and clothing.

Each week on their secret island brings new challenges and adventures. The book certainly has momentum, and rises to a great climax, with a satisfying little twist at the end.

Fantastic story for young readers

This was the first book I ever read entirely on my own, and I'm happy to say it led to a lengthy affair with the written word. It remains, to this day, one of my favourite books.
Its a story of 3 siblings who's parents have died, and they have been sent to live with their abusive aunt and uncle. Their only solace is a local boy who has even less than they have in life. The 4 of them plot and execute their escape. Its an excelent tale of adventure, with a great ending, and is perfect reading for someone just starting out.
The story is set in england in the early to mid 20th century (It was written around then as well) but this doesn't alienate the reader. I first read it in the mid 1980s and found I could completely relate to the heros of this story.
I highly recomend it to get your kids away from the boob tube and start them reading. It worked for me, and I have the attention span of your average gnat.

Well-paced novel with believable, endearing characters

Walkup has a knack for strong, likable characters, particularly evident in Jasmine, Wes, Frankie, and Danny.

Highlights:
I fell in love with Jasmine's sense of self--she is a teen with strong ethics and self-respect that shine through in all areas of her life. She is honest, goal-driven, kind, responsible, tough, and funny--a well-developed character who models a complex strength in what can only be defined as Ordinary Life. Considering how infrequently the term "strong female character" is attached to women who *aren't* stepping into traditionally male booty-kicking roles, it's fantastic to see Walkup highlighting a kind of strength that doesn't require any hand-to-hand combat. :)

Jasmine's relationship with Wes, a boy who--like her younger brother--has epilepsy, is both a sweet romance (with one of the better first dates in YA) and rich ground for exploring Jasmine's fears and hopes for her brother as he grows up. And Jasmine's brother, Danny, and her best friend, Frankie, are utterly adorable. They, even more than Wes, show the reader how deeply Jasmine is loved.

The only note that didn't ring entirely true for me was her mom's character arc. Although I wanted everything to be wrapped up well for Jasmine and her family, the transformation felt a little too easy for me, a concern teen readers may or may not share.

Overall, a great read that tackles big topics and difficult situations with humor and characters you will root for. With the resilience and optimism shown in this novel, Jasmine more than earns the nickname Wes gives her.

Extraordinary!

“This Ordinary Life” explores the story of a teenager, Jasmine, who dreams to be a DJ, but she is the one who takes care of her little brother, who has constant seizures. You know I do not like these kind of books that much, since I’m mostly attracted to horror, but this is a must read. Hands down!

The author has really simple writing style which makes the book flow very well. Also it features alcohol addiction, epilepsy, relationships, family crisis. What I liked mostly is that it gives you a fresh perspective on things, but also it makes you realize that sometimes we need to hope. A lot of readers would consider this book too good to be real, but, in contrary, I think this book is more than just a “teenage love story”. That’s what I liked most about it!

When it comes to Jennifer Walkup talking about epilepsy, it comes in such a natural way, that it doesn’t make a taboo subject. The book shows you both sides of having epilepsy. It doesn’t mean that you cannot live a normal life. The character of Wes gives you hope, and it makes you see life differently. You learn to love this character, and to admire his strength.

I would strongly recommend it! It is a fresh book and easy to read.

So Much Amazing Feels!

I really enjoyed reading this book. Even though it was a quick read(spent this afternoon reading it), there's a lot of amazing feels in the book. There was one point though, where I was afraid I was going to hate the entire book, but thankfully the author didn't go that way because I really didn't want to hate this book. I can tell this book is a work and love of passion for the author...her passion is seen on the pages through the characters in the book and that is the biggest reason I found myself really enjoying the story.

Good review of Statistics...but no MANOVA

I'm giving this book a four star rating. It was a wonderful refresher for some topics in Psychology Statistics but just not enough for Graduate School. It was missing the topics of MANOVA, multivariate analysis of variance and MANCOVA, multivariate analysis of covariance. But overall, the coverage of topics was good.
Statistics can be daunting for many, but remembering that mathematics and statistics are not the same as well as thinking of Statistics as a language are helpful. To learn a language, it takes practice and incorporation into your daily life. Practice, practice, practice makes one more comfortable with the language.
I would recommend it for an undergraduate Psychology student that needs additional reading for mastering the topic but for graduate students it simply is not enough. That's where YouTube comes in, the media video site is chock full of additional support and resource learning. That's how I got through my first graduate statistics class: this book and YouTube.

SPSS software does the number-crunching

I am a layman, but wanted to understand a bit about statistics for Psychology. After reading this book, it occurred to me that I would not use this book to help me pass statistics class, unless I used it as a reference. Without an overabundance of psychological jargon, this book makes learning key concepts and running SPSS software much more accessible. I'm not worried about the Math. SPSS software (student used version) is accessible and easy to understand with this book. The software does the number-crunching.

Too often, books are written in a way that complicates the learning process. This one is better in that way.

I have always been interested in statistics, since Psych 101. It makes me feel like I can make more informed choices. I've always wanted it to be more accessible.

"Dummies" books are always good, and they have certain conventions that make the books easy to understand. An example is: "Dummies" books have special icons that tell you key things about what you are about to read. There are tips, memory joggers, signals of common errors, and when things get technical.

I didn't get lost with this book, as much as I would have reading a college text. At least that is what I think.

I recommend this book as a reference for students, or as a text for laypeople.

Purchasing this book just for the SPSS information is well worth it. The fact that there are other concepts within the book is just icing on the cake. My husband is in psychology and I am in education. Our worlds often collide. It's been awhile since I've been in school, some my statistics are rusty; however, I'm heavy into educational research. For the amount of money that software manuals cost and the fact that you have to be a computer genius in order to understand the lingo, a general book for dummies is the way to go. This book is very easy to read. It is laid out perfectly for a quick reference if you have a question and the directions for SPSS helped me work through the software on my very first try.

How little we knew

I grew up in Irvington and went to school with the daughter of one of the top men of this family. We had no idea what her family's secret life was until it hit the newspapers in the 70's. We were all shocked. We were in this person's home and in the home of her cousin in Vailsburg and spent countless hours together sleeping over each other's houses. I didn't read this book until I was an adult and the book had been out for a year or so. Certainly, none of the graphic details of this book made it into the Irvington Herald or the Newark Star Ledger. Yes, it's graphic and I find the person a complete coward for spilling his guts in order to go into the witness protection program. He is a cold blooded murderer and should have been given no lenience whatsoever. He made the papers some time ago for supposedly attempting to run for some type of government office where he lived. Not only did I know this family, but the two men with the same first name but different color last names were acquaintances of my father. I never knew this until I was an adult with children of my own. He told me stories that made the hairs on my neck stand up. My sympathies go to my friend who went through terrible scrutiny for something she had nothing to do with. She was an innocent child and teenager. After she divorced, she kept her married name because she did not want to face the embarrassment of carrying a name that had such horrid memories. This book is extremely graphic and shows you exactly the type ruthless, cold blooded people they truly are. Anyone who glorifies organized crime should read this book.

I REMEMBER THE STORIES !!!!

I grew up in Irvington, NJ and knew most of the people in this book. Everyone was related to someone back then. Even my mom's hairdresser is the wife of one of the men. This book, although upsetting, brings back memories....good, bad and indifferent. I have read this book 4 times at different stages of my life and STILL find it fascinating. Ira Peznick, the man who tells the story (the one who rats them out) did it all for his OWN profit. He was a murderer just the same as those he squealed on yet he gets protection!! Go figure!! The book is True, the people are REAL, the places are CORRECT, the memories still HAUNT. The families still feel SHAME....I KNOW!! The stories have been passed down over the years and the men involved, (if not dead already) still feel remorse. All those from NEWARK, IRVINGTON, BELLEVILLE, THE ORANGES, and NEW JERSEY IN GENERAL SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!!

A definitive guide for establishing financial success

Recently, after my son turned 19 and moved into his own place, I wanted him to learn about healthy financial decisions in a manner I never had the chance to receive when I was young. After digesting the material with him, I can easily attest that the book is dense with well laid-out information, lacking in fillers, and provisions an easy plan for maintaining your lifestyle while planning for the future. From creating and implementing your financial blueprint to things like dealing with unexpected expenses and simplifying your budget, there is nothing left out of this stellar primer for developing financial responsibility and freedom. We really liked the budgeting examples and the references to individuals as well as the direct writing style that displayed the author’s obvious command of the subject. Also, the chapter on where to put your money after paying yourself first is indispensable in itself alone.

In summation, if you are looking for the perfect book to start you on your way to financial freedom and responsibility, you can’t do better than this one. I’m sure it will be a reference in my library for a long time to come.

There's plenty to like about this book! Court keeps producing decent financial information and for the beginner to intermediate reader there's some great value added to their financial lives..

A few areas that would have made this a 5 star review:

Considering a more global perspective I.e. not making it us centric, a small criticism

A financial blueprint is great and goals are important however there could be more discussion on investing.. spoiler you should check out his other books as from memory they go into more detail about this

All in all you can see courts passion to help others achieve their financial goals, and sure he'll continue to inspire for years to come!

About the Author
BRETT PELHAM grew up as the second of six children near the small town of Rossville, Georgia. Brett received his B.S. from Berry College in 1983 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989. He wrote the first edition of this book while working as an associate professor at UCLA, and he is currently a program officer in social psychology at the National Science Foundation. The bulk of his research focuses on automatic social judgment and self-evaluation. He teaches courses in social psychology, research methods, statistics, social cognition, and the self-concept. In his spare time, he enjoys juggling, sculpting, listening to alternative rock music, cooking, and traveling. His two favorite activities while completing the latest revision of this textbook (in late July of 2011) were spending time with his 2.9-year-old daughter Brooklyn and his 8.5-year-old son Lincoln. Along with his wife LJ Pelham, he is co-inventor of the recently released card game PRIME. Along with his son Lincoln, he is co-inventor of the soon-to-be released card game Cliff-Hanger. Along with his daughter Brooklyn, he is coinventor of the not-so-soon-to-be-released card game It's a Hat. You Like It? His most recent writing project is a novel tentatively entitled Elvis 2.0, which focuses on problems associated with the apparent resurrection of Elvis Presley.

HART BLANTON grew up as the second of three children in a small town in Appalachian Virginia. Hart received his B.A. from Virginia Tech in 1990 and received his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1994. He worked on the second edition of this book while at SUNY, Albany, and the third edition while at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and the fourth edition while at the University of Connecticut. The bulk of his research is on social influence and social communication. He has taught courses in research methods, social psychology, statistics, the self, social comparison, and social influence. Most recently, he has become interested in what he terms "negative psychology." This he conceptualizes as the formal study of social structural and individual emotional factors that lead people to die before their time. He hopes to finish his work on this new research area very quickly because, well, one never knows.

Great book, very easy

This is a really nice book that our prof used for my psych methodology course at college; I found it really easy to read and understand but at the same time it makes all the important principles very clear, If you use it in conjunction with the appendices at the end, you'll have a pretty good understanding of what to look out for when designing experiments and writing papers.

Way too much extraneous text

I think it's important that I reveal myself as a student currently reading this text and not as someone who has read comparable alternatives to this book. This book may be the best in the field, though I certainly hope that isn't the case.

There is valuable information in this text, it's just hidden throughout a staggering volume of garbage. Of the 470ish pages in this book, only about 50 are really useful and a carefully written 100 more could be used to contextualize it in such a way that I didn't feel as though my time was being completely wasted every time I picked this book up, let alone open it for assigned reading. Context is, after all, useful, but it should be concise. I have one (only one!) semester's worth of statistics under my belt and perhaps it is that class that makes this book so painful to read. But even if I hadn't taken that class, I'd still be infuriated by the authors' blatant lack of brevity *except for the useful information*. The important parts actually worth remembering are the only short sentences in the book! It's good that they're concise and easy to understand, but unnecessarily frustrating to dredge through all the frivolous, seemingly unedited examples in order to actually feel like I'm doing something worthwhile when I happen to come across one useful sentence. Given that this book is actually used (and in it's 4th edition, no less), it may just be that this book is best used by students with no statistical experience. Or it may be that the other textbooks in the field are even worse than this one. Either way, if you've taken introductory psychology and know a thing or two about stats, save yourself the money and don't buy this book. You can better use all the time you would have wasted doing just about anything else.

Good but Not Concise

I'm using this to teach Research Methods in Psychology right now. It is very thorough, but I feel that it could cover the same information and be more concise. I probably will end up switching texts next time I teach the course.

Drawing on diaries and personal accounts, this book chronicles forgotten actions in the fall of the Philippines through the recollections of American servicemen. The author covers the 90 day perseverance of Bataan's tiny air force, the first PT boat raid of the war, the last U.S. horse cavalry charge in history, a lone U.S. submarine's attack on a Japanese invasion fleet, the deliberate bombing of Bataan's main field hospital by the Japanese, the difficult and uneasy surrender of Bataan, Corregidor's doomed resistance and the surrender of the Southern Islands of the archipelago.

This outstanding and thought provoking book is a 'must-read' by anyone interested in individual sovereignty and freedom. It is very well
written and meticulously researched. If you are fed up with the current political democratic system of false alternatives, this book provides a true alternative social organization of economic democracy based upon contract rather than coercion. This alternative natural government provides for proprietary management of all government services.
