Black Feathers

This is a very careful and intelligent approach to a particular method of ocean racing. I feel qualified to share my opinion of this book by Robert and Jeanne Crawford because I have sailed and raced 100,000 miles in the Pacific, Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and the South China Sea. Four Pacific crossings including the Pacific Cup Doublehanded Race in 1988. I cast an Ocean Racer's eye on this account and it comes up right. I especially like the description of the events and ambition that led up to the decision to sail in the 2008 Singlehanded Trans Pac. The personal interaction between Robert, his family and the other competitors is insightful and sensitive. Never boastful or sensational , a delightful account with the right mix of detail and personal recall of events make this book a joy to read. Included are nuts and bolts appendices applicable to any such voyage. Any who has ever sailed will enjoy this book and everyone else will find it a superb adventure story. It's required reading for any novice or experienced sailor who contemplates a voyage, singlehanded or crewed on a big ocean.

Black Feathers is a Great Read

After sailing this weekend in the IYC DH Lightship, the skipper I was sailing with mentioned that there was a book about Black Feathers, I immediately went on Amazon and ordered a copy. I've seen this Cal 20 in the S.F. South Beach Marina and taken a close look at all the equipment setup for ocean racing.

Black Feathers, A Pocket Racer Sails the Singlehanded Transpac is a great read. The detailed accounts of high emotions and reasoning behind what is needed to achieve the accomplishment of completing the SSS Transpac were especially interesting to me. The specific details about what is needed for a small boat to be equipped properly for this type of voyage will be of use to me now and in the future.

My compliments to Robert and Jeanne Crawford for compiling this book. The people in Oregon with the large Cal 20 fleet weren't the only people interested in your story. I'm glad that there was a list of small boats that have competed in the SSS Transpac over the years that included my Wilderness 21. The reading of this book has give me new inspiration to consider what would be needed for my boat Tinker to compete in this event.

Thanks again to Robert for this great book. I recommend anyone seriously interested in the Singlehanded Sailing Society or Transpac should pick up a copy.

Black Feathers' trip to Hawaii

Even though I'm not a sailor, this book is fascinating. I really felt like I was on the boat during the first part of the book, which tells about the trip. I doubt the part about how to rig your boat for sea travel will make much sense to me, but I bought a copy for my neighbor who is interested in fixing up his boat for sea travel. He can't wait to get started on it. Kay

Eragon, a young farm boy, finds a marvelous blue stone in a mystical mountain place. Before he can trade it for food to get his family through the hard winter, it hatches a beautiful sapphire-blue dragon, a race thought to be extinct. Eragon bonds with the dragon, and when his family is killed by the marauding Ra'zac, he discovers that he is the last of the Dragon Riders, fated to play a decisive part in the coming war between the human but hidden Varden, dwarves, elves, the diabolical Shades and their neanderthal Urgalls, all pitted against and allied with each other and the evil King Galbatorix. The odd blue "stone" he found has hatched into a dragon. He and Safira are able to communicate telepathically, so even when they are parted during their high and low adventures with magicians, dwarves, inhuman monsters sent to do the evil king's bidding, elves, and simply crafty humans, they are able to work together as a team. Paolini has received some popular press because of his own youth, and indeed some of the details here are naiveâ€"Medieval common people certainly didn't retire to their own personal bedrooms!â€"but overall he has designed a well integrated epic, complete with a Latinate language, politically acute issues, and well-realized emotions. Narrator Gerard Doyle's extensive repertoire of voices provides a compelling atmosphere that will hold the audience's attention through Eragon's travails. His slightly British accent lends just the right storytelling texture, making the audio performance an extension of the story itself. Five stars!!

I thoroughly enjoyed Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance of Chris Paolini's The Inheritance Cycle series. Originally intended as a trilogy, their bestselling success spawned a fourth book, which was a very welcome addition. I have since handed them down to my nephew where they are enjoying a new life with a new generation.

Though they've been out for quite awhile now, I have to be honest and say I bought them years ago, and only got them off the shelf a few months ago. Having been grown up as an avid fan of Dungeons and Dragons, Lord of the Rings, and the usual fantasy fare, I was pretty excited to re-enter that universe.

These have been reviewed ad infinitum; so I think I can really only add to the discussion my own experience with the four book as a 47-year-old reader. I was a bit concerned that they might be written a bit too much for kids, as I'd heard they were. But, I have to say, I was definitely misinformed. These are as applicable to adults as the Harry Potter or Hunger Games books or any other well-written fantasy tales that were initially marketed to the teen reader market, but obviously found runaway success with readers from all age brackets.

In short, each of the four books was a very fun read, and I would absolutely recommend the series to anyone with an interest in the fantasy genre.

I wish I had read it sooner

A very engaging read. Don't be deterred by criticism. I did not read this series for a long time after hearing much criticism of the young author and now regret that I did not read it sooner.

There is a review on here stating that the book is only decent for a 17 year old to have written but not an adult, and that is nonsense. You would not know it was written by a 17 year old unless you were told and it is criticized unfairly because of his age. He does not "borrow" fantasy elements from more widely known authors any more than those widely known authors borrowed from ancient fairy tails. Tolkien and Le Guinn were not any more creative, many fantasy elements in their stories go back to before their stories as well. But this author is judged much more harshly and unjustly because he is young by people who are unable to form their own opinions and blindly judge the worth of a book by its acclaim. And the fact that this book is not a cult classic such as Tolkein's should not affect its merit.

It is a very good book and is only insulted by those jealous of the young author's success.

Not bad

I had been looking forward to reading this book for a long time. It goes in to a LOT of detail and description which is kind of fun if you like imaginary dragon worlds. The book does not seem to have a set direction though, as in not much happens to progress the story by the end of the book. I found myself a little bored with it about 3/4 of the way through, but finished it anyway. I know there are other books in the series, but the first one did not leave me wanting to rush out and buy the next one or the complete series. I might borrow them from the library, but not purchase them.

About the Author
The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. Stewart was most recently Professor of Mathematics at McMaster University, and his research field was harmonic analysis. Stewart was the author of a best-selling calculus textbook series published by Cengage Learning, including CALCULUS, CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, and CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, as well as a series of precalculus texts.

It's a math book, but that's where good things I have to say end.

I really wanted to like this book since I value a concise approach, but I think it fails to lay a solid foundation for understanding (at least multivariable) calculus. I'm only familiar with Ch.10-13 because it was required for a calc 3 class. The problem with its approach is that it quickly explains new concepts, making sense only half the time, then launches into examples where it skips important logical steps in problem setup. Stating a problem and then immediately writing the relevant theorem without any discussion doesn't teach "mathematically rigorous" thinking as so many instructors seem to love Stewart for, and it doesn't lay the foundation for creative application of the concepts in physics.

If you have to get this book for a class, sorry. Watching Khan Academy videos was helpful for me, just know that Sal doesn't cover stuff in the same order as the book or most classes, and doesn't give much attention to difficult double/triple integral problems (something this book gets lost in while glossing over some of the concepts).

If you're looking for a self-study book, this is definitely not it because it's hard enough to understand with the help of a professor. Plus the problems are generally uninteresting and avoid challenging the reader with physics applications. There are plenty of resources online for self-studying math so track down one of those for better recommendations.

The Worst I've Used

This is actually my third semester using this book. I absolutely detest it.

1. The answer key in the back has omitted chapters 4 and 5, so I have no way of knowing if my homework is correct or not. I use the answers to gauge how well I am doing, not to cheat. I have no way to tell if I'm on the right track or not.
2. There is a lot information in this book. A lot. That's good, but the problem is that when new information is introduced there is no reminder of past information, pertinent information, that is needed to establish a full understanding of the problem.
3. In some situations understanding a problem, such as how to deal with an absolute value in an integral, are either glossed over or nonexistent.
4. It appears that most of the examples are dealing with the easiest concepts while the homework deals with far more difficult ones. It is easy to get lost in the homework with no direction from the book.

A DEFINITIVE BOOK

this is one of the couple of dozen books ever written on african american history and the african american experience that has to be considered definitive. should be read by anyone seeking a more in-depth and nuanced understanding of chattel slavery and how it worked on a day-to-day basis as well as at a more overarching level. this research does an outstanding job of connecting enslaved africans and their american-born descendents to the culture, rituals, customs, and traditions of the motherland.

Loved reading and educating myself on my history !! Throughout junior and high school we were taught European history and about how oppressed Africans were. This book she's lighg in how educated and intelligent Blacks are; and about how were we professionals, queens and kings prior to slavery!!

Not so easy read - But understandable

I needed this book for my African American History Final Essay... It was very interesting, engaging and easy to read in the most part (take this from an ESL student). Great Book. I still have it and skim through it from time to time to remember how lucky I am for living in this time period... Very sad IMO

An Unintentional Comedy Classic!

This book is a classic in the same sense that "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is considered a classic film. Both are so mind boggling awful, only a true genius could have been responsible for them. Anna Margaret Ross, pen-name Amanda McKittrick Ros, self-published Irene Iddesleigh in 1897, with funds provided by her husband as a tenth wedding anniversary present. It is said that The Oxford literary group the Inklings, which included such luminaries as C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, would hold reading competitions to determine who could get the furthest through this book without laughing. If you want to hold your own book club "straight face" competition you might have difficulty getting paper copies of Irene Iddesleigh. It's long out of print, with prices ranging from $100 to $800 depending on the age and condition of the book. Isn't it great Amazon offers the Kindle edition now for free!

Here is an example of her wonderfully purple prose:

Historically, worth your time.

Mark Twain described it as "The most unintentionally humorous piece of literature ever written". This book is also mentioned in the documentary Bad Writing. It's worth the read in a historical aspect just so you can say you have read it but not in an enjoyment aspect.

If you teach English, this is a must read

Irene Iddesleigh is referred in one source as the worst novel ever. That may be, but her overuse of alliteration, sometimes silly description and general bad plot makes it an interesting read. Parts of it are classic in their badness. Teachers can use it to emphasize how students should and should not write. I'm glad I read it.
