Totally Unexpected!!!

Thrown into prison for a seemingly simple crime, Riana's goal is simply to survive. No prison cells, no make/female segregation, no chance of parole or escape. Just a mass of humanity thrown into hell, a melting pot of horror.

Her first day, she sees Cain and latches on to him for survival. The description of the prison environment makes you cringe, and hold your breath wondering how Riana is going to survive. The only way is for her to give herself to Cain, the strongest person there.

The story is so descriptive, you find yourself sucked into that planetary world. You watch Cain and Diana's relationship start in survival mode and morph into something more. You get more of a sense of who they are, not based on background information, but on how their relationship develops.

I was expecting an erotic romance, but what I received was so much more. I was very pleasantly surprised.

Gritty Erotic Sci-Fi romance!

This erotic sci-fi thriller is the story of Riana, thrown into the planetary prison Hold and told by a well meaning but unsympathetic guard to find the strongest man there to protect her - and she does, finding Cain and giving herself to him in hopes that he'll help her survive. I really enjoyed this unique story. There isn't a lot of character buildup to start but the setting is well described, bleak and cold in its description of the base level of humans left to survive on their own in this prison. Riana is a strong female character latching on to Cain when he offers her the chance to be with him. It's a do or die situation for her and she does the only thing she can, expecting the sex with him to be horrible but finding that once their initial encounter is out of the way, she is actually attracted to him. The sex scenes are definitely hot and steamy, and though Cain is not a big talker, we get the impression that he is an upright guy, protective of Riana once she is in his sphere of control. It's a unique romance, but they find something to believe in with each other, and this makes the story riveting to read as they try to find a way out of the hellhole they are in. The ending is sweetly satisfying. Loved it! 5 stars for a thoroughly entertaining read.

BUY THIS BOOK!

THIS BOOK WAS SOOOOOOOO GOOD! I wasn't really sure what I was getting myself into when I bought it.. First book I've read by this author.. I read the blurb and figured it sounded okay.. I mean it's erotica and that's exactly what it is.. BUT IT'S THE GOOD type of erotica. ZERO cheese with an amazing plot and absolutely NO FILLER. The hero and heroine were amazing.. It's been awhile since I could say that. Usually one of them gets on my nerves in erotica books. And though I am not a grammar snob I found the writing style as smooth as butter. There really isn't one thing I didn't like about the book. When I realized it had less than 200pgs I was concerned that it wouldn't be long enough but I found it to be the right amount. I was sucked in on the first page, nothing was left out for question, and it had a really nice epilogue. It found it's way to my favorites folder on my kindle. Not very many books have made it there. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Save your money

I own some good cookbooks by James Beard. BUT THIS ONE was NOT written by James Beard. It was put together by his heirs ostensibly to make some money from his deserved good name. In the process of hacking this together they went a little PC on the old recipes (whole wheat pasta in lasagna??!! -- GAG) and threw in a few of the old originals. Save your money and get a reprint of his original books untouched by his less talented heirs.

James Beard is one of the foundations in the story of American cooking and especially of its cookbooks. This book not only contains many of his recipes, about 450, but it also tells his story in in the foreword and introduction.

There are no pictures of the recipes, but despite what some might think, these are not the all-encompassing recipes that take hours of preparation and exotic ingredients. There are very few elements that cannot be found in an ordinary grocery store.
Recipes include: first courses and cocktail food, soups, salads, beef and veal, pork, lamb, poultry and game birds, fish and shellfish, eggs, pasta, vegetables, rice, grains and beans, yeast and quick breads, fruits, hot, cold and frozen desserts, cakes, pies and tarts, cookies and bars, basic stocks and sauces.

This is probably not the book for a beginning cook, but with some determination most could prepare these recipes and the family would enjoy them. However one recipe, brioche en surprise is really onion sandwiches which the introduction states - that your reputation as a hostess can be built up (in a good way) because they are as contagious as measles. Somehow I cannot picture a party appreciating all those sandwiches whose fillings consist of onions. I'm an onion lover, but they just do not seem like party fare.

We did really enjoy the hearty beef salad, the white bean tuna salad and especially Mrs. Maynard's cinnamon rolls containing rum in the filling. My mother in law used to make these and refused to give up the recipe. Evidently this is where it came from and the household is happy to have this treat back in the family.

A fine, contemporary classic. Not that I don't love the Joy, Fanny Farmer and the Settlement, but it\s nice to hava a cook book that was written for my own generation

About the Author
Alan J. Marcus is a Professor of Finance in the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management at Boston College. His main research interests are in derivatives and securities markets. He is co-author (with Zvi Bodie and Alex Kane) of the texts Investments and Essentials of Investments. Professor Marcus has served as a research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Professor Marcus also spent two years at Freddie Mac, where he helped to develop mortgage pricing and credit risk models. He currently serves on the Research Foundation Advisory Board of the CFA Institute.

Professor of finance and economics at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. He has been visiting professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo; Graduate School of Business, Harvard; Kennedy School of Government, Harvard; and research associate, National Bureau of Economic Research. An author of many articles in finance and management journals, Professor Kane’s research is mainly in corporate finance, portfolio management, and capital markets, most recently in the measurement of market volatility and pricing of options.

Zvi Bodie is professor of finance and economics at Boston University School of Management. He holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has served on the finance faculty at Harvard Business School and MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Professor Bodie has published widely on pension finance and investment strategy in leading professional journals. His books include Worry-Free Investing: A safe Approach to Achieving your Lifetime Financial Goals and Foundations of Pension Finance. Professor Bodie is managing director of Integrated Finance Limited, a specialized investment bank and financial engineering company. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Pension Research Council.

Limited solution details. Cheap pages and binding.

Not much of a description on many solutions. Just provides answers. Not much help.
Also the paper quality is REALLY REALLY cheap. You can see thru the next page's text and that's really annoying especially if you try to take notes or use highlighter. Bleeds thru the pages behind. So horrible!

Worth the purchase

The solutions are pretty limited in steps to solution, so you will need to know the basics to understand some of the assumed steps to completion. Overall, I am glad I had it to help confirm the final answers from the problems. I would recommend purchase if you will not have another source for the answers.

Very helpful for most problems but there are some where an answer is provided but no feedback on how that answer was achieved. Most everything has the detail but there are some that don't that is why this doesn't get 5 stars.

I presume they sell this book for a reason and if it allows you to recreate at home at least some of the fastastic food you can

Succulent r�cipes and surprisingly both affordable pecuniary wise as well as preparation wise. I first saw the book at London's Moti Mahal Restaurant, arguably the most satisfactory restaurant among that city's fabulous subcontinent cuisine ones, where they sell it, but preferred to order it from amazon instead of carrying it along after my lunch there. I presume they sell this book for a reason and if it allows you to recreate at home at least some of the fastastic food you can enjoy at Moti Mahal, it will be money well spent. The recipes we've essayed at home surely point towards that direction.

Zach Friedland

At the age of 13, Zach co-authored The Big Decision with his father to learn and teach others how to make good decisions in life.

In the first part of the book, Zach has drawn on his experience in Pop Warner football to write a story about how Ryan, an up-and-coming star running back on the middle school football team, is faced with a big decision. When Ryan asks his dad for help, rather than telling him what to do, his dad empowers him with a framework to make his big decision for himself.

Zach has helped guide a class of 5th graders through a 4-week journey in which they learned how to apply the book to work through difficult decisions they were facing. In October 2013, along with his father, he’ll be presenting on how to make better life decisions at the Conscious Capitalism CEO Summit.

Zach lives in San Diego, California, where he is in 8th grade and is passionate about lacrosse. He also loves to surf, hang out with friends and play with his younger brother, Dylan.

Read it, Teach it, Read it again, share it with your family!

Relatable, inspiring and Timeless. Truly a great read and here is why: First, thank you Danny Friedland for your coordinated efforts with Zach to put this book out there for all of us to absorb. I am lucky enough to have been through Dr.Friedlands course Achieving Peak Performance which can be found here. [...] (fyi, this is not a paid endorsement :), It's just so good, it's not fair to you the reader, that I don't share it with you) With that, my humble suggestion to all of you reading this and wondering about the book and what it may offer is this: Get the book and read it. Period. Then, take the course on achieving peak performance. Then, read the book again. Last, begin to use what you've learned in your daily lives and things will change for you and for all of us.
I've learned quite a number of things in my life, but I'm still eager to seek new ways to improve my internal voice that is on 24/7 and regulates my actions and activities. I once read, "If you don't like where you're at, or how you got there....remember, your best thinking got you where you are......and your'e best thinking probably won't get you out". So, seek wisdom to learn to think differently was the goal.
Dr. Friedland has laid the groundwork to do just that, to think differently about your situations and your own reactions to what is happening at the moment. You'll also learn how to Identify what's most important to you on a daily basis through 15 minutes daily of complete quiet and reflection. This may be the secret right here! When you're laser focused, things tend to pick up speed and results become more readily visible. Here is the best part for me, the ABSOLUTE PINNACLE FOR ME, I get to teach this to my kids........... I'm a father of two boys, 9 and 7. Being exposed to the brilliance of what can happen here is amazing. Not only am I learning more about how to re-frame what is going on around me to create a positive experience, I get to teach it to my kids. So not only are they being taught to think differently at an early age, at 45 years old, I"m being taught the exact same thing and reinforcing this while spending time in the place I truly love the most, which is in the same air space as my family. If I know that I can teach kids, I can affect generations to come. If you haven't heard of the butterfly effect, give it a google search. I'm flapping my wings over here with my family with incredible guidance from Danny Friedland and Zach. Everything you do matters. Everything. Dr. Friedland, I thank you. My family does too!

Excellent!

Considering this book was written by a father and son, I decided to read it together with my son, who is almost the same age as Zach. The results were really inspiring in that my son was able to identify with Zach's predicament of having to make a difficult decision which affected multiple people close to him. Major decision making is clearly a situation that kids(and adults) are faced with more often than we realize yet don't necessarily have the tools required to effectively deal with such circumstances. We found Zach's process of arriving at the his decision, as well as the decision he made to be insightful and very valuable.

When I began reading this book, I did not expect it to culminate in some life changing concepts to live a better life. It seems like a simple book and a simply story, but I have used the concepts which are amazingly articulated in my life almost daily. The idea of asking better questions to get better answers is brilliant, and it can be used by readers of all ages.

Covering creativity

What a loving tribute to Allen Lane, the visionary who founded Penguin Books in 1935. Few publishers have consistently put their best `face' forward year after year over thousands of titles and I find it surprising that this Penguin cover history hasn't been written before 2005.

Admittedly most of their covers until the Fifties, though distinctive in the three-tier horizontal design, were not that creative but things slowly changed no doubt because of market pressure from other paperback publishers. I thought Penguin covers really took of in 1962 with the use of Romek Marber's simple cover grid. Pages 104-5 in the book show eighteen brilliant covers using simple graphics with black, green and red inks. The grid cover style ran into the seventies with the non-fiction Pelicans and nicely still using everybody's favorite type: Helvetica.

Author Phil Baines has done a lot of research for the book though it is basically visual with excellent short text pieces for the various title genres. A nice touch is spread of forty-eight Penguin logos from 1935 to 2005 at the back of the book and it is this kind of editorial thoughtfulness that makes the book so interesting.

I picked this up because of the book's physical beauty, but I've just read it in one sitting, couldn't put it down--a fascinating window into 20th-century British cultural history as well as book design.

A fun look at Penguin book design over the decades

I enjoyed reading this book, which provides a heavily-illustrated history of Penguin book covers from 1935 to 2005. There are a lot of wonderful covers here. The original penguin logo was adorable. At the back of the book, there's a listing of the logos from over the years, and the first penguin is definitely my favorite.

It's great to look through and see covers from some books I have. There's a nice tactile quality to the design of this book that dovetails nicely with the subject at hand.

My only complaint is that the side notes in the useful chapters on the history of Penguin are in orange and are hard to read. I get why they chose orange, but that doesn't help my eyes to read it. But that's a minor point.

A neat, fun read on Penguin's own history and British design more broadly.

This book is frustrating.

I have this book for a textbook. I have completed every assignment up to section 6 so far. This is the most frustrating textbook I've ever had. Here's why:

Screenshots in book often don't help, for the website now is changed. And you know how greyed out links on the internet means "if you click here nothing will happen, this link is dead"? Well, greyed out links work on this site, sometimes. Sometimes they don't.

The book will tell you to go to a web page that's actually a tab, or a button, or a list. It calls down-arrows links. It says to "clear a selection" when it means "uncheck a box". It often pointlessly uses a m paragraph to tell you "don't bother clicking anything, just click ok".

And if you skin over a pointless-looking paragraph, there will be some small three crucial words buried in it.

You have to type in url's. And it gives you the long and/or complicated ones that must be carefully typed out--the weird character kind with percents, numbers, random capitalized letters mixed with random small letters, and such. Complicating this, the book is printed in a font where you often can't tell "one (1)" from "little L (l)". Most links have multiples of each in it.

I just completed section 5 and two URL bit.ly links did not work--no matter how many times I retyped them with differing 1's and l's.

This is a well written book that has easy to understand exercises and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone with anxiety or lives with someone with anxiety.

using it to help others

I've been counseling trauma survivors since 2006. Many have issues that require a great deal of their time, sweat, and tears. This book has given me material that I can share in hopes of smoothing the rough edges of their lives. One can never have too many tools in the tool chest.
