You Can Succeed on the FE: AM EXAM

By reviewing and studying this book, you can succeed on the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination Morning Session. The entire FE Exam is an eight-hour, supplied-reference exam split into AM and PM sessions lasting four hours apiece; the morning session is common to all engineering disciplines, while the afternoon session is offered in five disciplines. Because the FE was formerly known as the EIT (Engineer-in-Training) Exam, many aspiring engineers know it today as the "FE/EIT."

The purpose of REA's The Best Test Preparation & Review Course for the FE: AM Exam is to prepare you sufficiently for the morning portion of the FE Exam. The Fundamentals of Engineering Exam is one part in the four-step process toward becoming a professional engineer (P.E.). It is administered by NCEES and is offered twice a year, on Saturdays in April and October. Graduating from an approved four-year engineering program and passing the FE qualifies you for certification as an Engineer-in-Training or an Engineer Intern. The final two steps towards licensing as a P.E. involve completion of four years of additional engineering experience and passing the Principles and Practices of Engineering (PE) Examination, which NCEES also administers. Registration as a professional engineer is deemed both highly rewarding and beneficial in the engineering community.

Test Format
The FE features two distinct sections. One section, the FE: AM, is given in the morning while the other, the FE: PM, is administered in the afternoon. This book will prepare you for the FE: AM Exam.

The FE: AM is a supplied-reference exam, so candidates are not permitted to bring reference material into the test center. Instead, you will be mailed a reference guide when you register for the exam. You can also view, at no charge, the entire up-to-date FE Supplied-Reference Handbook at the NCEES Website. (Each FE Exam will be administered using the latest edition of the handbook. You can count on your FE handbook review being considerably enhanced by study of our subject reviews and completion of our model tests.) You can also be assured that the NCEES guide will provide all the charts, graphs, tables, and formulae you will need. The same book will be given to you when you sit for the test.

You will have four hours to complete the AM portion of the exam. It consists of 120 questions spanning 12 engineering subjects:

Scoring the Exam
Your FE: AM score is based upon the number of correct answers you choose. Each of the 120 questions is worth 1 point, and no points are subtracted for incorrect answers. A single score between 0 and 100 is given for the entire test (both AM and PM sections), and both sections are weighted equally. The grade given is on a pass/fail basis. The breakpoint between passing and failing varies from state to state, although 70 is a general reference point for passing. Thus, the general reference point for passing the FE: AM section alone would be 35.

The pass/fail margin is not a percentage of correct answers or a percentage of students who scored lower than you. This number fluctuates from year to year and is reestablished with every test administration. It is based on previous exam administrations and relates your score to those of previous FE examinees.

This text is good.

The text is an improvement over prior texts by the REA. All the areas contain more topical material. I've passed AM twice and these problems look good. My concern is the PM which is a bit more slippery. This book alone will not suffice for PM; however, it's a good starter for PM-GENERAL. The Potter text and the sample exams
available with the registration materials provide a better profile
of the PM component of the examination.

Decent Enough

I bought this book (and the PM version) to restore my years-ago university knowledge. I read virtually all of the PM book, and a wide but more random swath of the AM book. I did pass the FE on the first try, for what that's worth.

The good: the questions in the book were of the same type and difficulty as questions on the actual exam. The reviews are decently written, though I admit I don't usually do more than briefly follow worked problems and focus instead on the text. What I particularly liked about the review sections was their independence: I felt quite normal skipping around things that I more or less remembered.

The bad: the book is fat, includes a lot of extra material and, yes, blatant errors. Also, the problems are usually tough to follow, and the reviews assume you have (or had and can quickly recover) a thorough knowledge of the subject. Fluids still confuse me, for example.

Overall I was happy enough with the texts, especially given their price compared to others of the same kind. They restored enough of my memory that I at least knew something about each exam question... and given that I haven't used most of that knowledge for years that's saying quite a lot!

When all else fails...

With five days until the FE, I decided to purchase this book. Given the choice again, I would still purchase it because it gave me an idea of what would be on the test, which is the greatest asset the book provides. In fact, some of the example problems were very similar to the actual test questions. The book does contain numerous errors, however, and the solution explanations are generally inadequate. I felt swindled after looking at the poor proof-reading of the text.
You might be better suited by downloading a free copy of the pdf of the equations given during the exam, which you can find by typing "fundamentals of engineering supplied reference handbook" in a search engine. Since the questions on the AM test are fairly general, look over the examples of the first few chapters of your engineering books.
The book might appeal to some because of its massive size - "If it's this big it's gotta be good." I don't like paying the high price and lugging around this type of large exam review book and would buy a smaller one given the opportunity.

Practical Advice and Some Interesting Techniques

The problem this book deals with is nothing new. Stress or "discomfort" using the term of the author is killing us. It's an adaptation that no longer servers us in the modern and relatively safe world. Nothing new there.

The author however has some interesting and very practical advice on how to connect these feelings of discomfort with other positive feelings such as a challenge in order to mitigate their harmful effects and even in fact turn them into a positive. Some of his "fifteen" techniques aren't anything new such as taking technology breaks and connecting with real people. However he does introduce some rather unique and useful ideas.

This book has Amazon's "Search Inside" feature and I recommend you take advantage of it and preview the book before you buy.

Comfort is Overrated

This book is brilliant! I encourage one to read and re-read it. While its title initially intrigued me, it almost made me turn away. The thought that something within me, which is innately designed to help me survive, could also be turning against me was troubling. Turns out, my close-call with avoidance of reading this book (a potential uncomfortable experience) is exactly the book's point. We're all becoming increasingly uncomfortable with being uncomfortable, so we avoid it at all costs. If I'm correctly understanding the premise, our non-stop, multi-tasking, never-slow-down world, where our brain rarely gets a break, is setting off a series of chemical reactions between the limbic and cerebral parts of our brain, causing us to be in higher states of what Schoen calls agitance, ultimately causing our survival instinct to be set on code red 24/7. Imagine, always being in fight or flight mode.

So, naturally, we work to avoid discomfort (what our brain is translating as life-threatening), and maladaptive habits form, such as addictions, compulsive disorders, physical illnesses, insominia, protective and avoidance habits, etc. The more we avoid uncomfortable experiences, the less tolerance we develop for being uncomfortable, causing our limbic brain (the emotional part of the brain) to view all forms of discomfort as fear, and a threat to our survival. To make matters worse, the limbic brain is innately designed to bypass the cerebral (logic) brain when survival is at risk. So, logic is literally bypassed.

I like how thoroughly Schoen explains what is happening in our heads. It's empowering. Though, my favorite part of the book is part two, where Schoen provides 15 strategies that can literally turn this chemical and emotional reaction around (a kind of rewiring of it) before it completely rewires us. Essentially, Schoen is giving us the tools to train ourselves to be more comfortable with being uncomfortable, and to develop a better relationship with pain and discomfort, with life, really. These strategies are not complicated. I've tried a couple. As Schoen explains it, he's helping us to turn our "sources of discomfort into sources of power."

I left a lot out, of course, like Schoen's long and distinguished career in this field, his research, case study examples, and other facts and studies that substantiate his work and strategies. In the end, it looks like FDR was right about fear. And, in this case, what you don't know is hurting you.

I'm a really strong person who has faced many physical and emotional challenges, yet, I know I have more recently developed some avoidance habits, and it was beginning to affect how I reacted to people and situations. What wasn't killing me was no longer making me stronger; on the contrary, it was beginning to weaken and change me. I'm going on a cruise to Europe today, and I intend to begin incorporating Schoen's 15 Strategies into my life, beginning with #12, "Taking a Breather."

This Book Turns "New Age Pablum" on Its Head

Everyone's looking for ways to solve their problems and alleviate the pain in their lives. The current rage in New Age books is to suggest that you can achieve a perfectly happy life by "just thinking positive thoughts." Do that, and everything will work out. "Read our books. Attend our seminars. Buy our tapes. Do what we say, and life will be glorious."
Of course, this drivel doesn't work. If it did, people would stop buying these books, because their problems would have been solved, and their pain would have been relieved.
"Your Survival Instinct is Killing You" turns all of this nonsense on its head. And it does so without the author even feeling a need to point the finger at New Age silliness. He focuses on what does work, not what doesn't.
The book's basic premise can be summarized in one sentence, straight off page 26 of the book: "You need to become more comfortable with being uncomfortable."
From there, the author skillfully explains why it is important to experience life as it is, and then respond appropriately.
I won't give away his insights and solutions, but, trust me, they are remarkable. I have read thousands of books in my life, and only rarely do I find one that offers truly new and useful information. This is definitely one of them.
Congrats to the author. This is masterful work.
