Problems - YES, but STILL a good book!

I used this book along with the free and awesome wibit video series ([...] - thanks Bryan and Kevin!) - and it is a good thing I did. I am a book learner, but occasionally I need things explained by a person, which is where I used wibit to fill in.

1) The book looks great! Colors, layout, paper texture - it makes it easy on the senses to say "give me more!"

2) It is very well organized - better than any other book I've acquired on programming. The index and reference sections make it a snap to find the area you needed to brush up on.

3) MINUS TWO STARS - There are LOTS of errors in this book. I would have only taken one star, but a review of the 3rd edition reviews shows me that they don't take the accuracy of the book seriously.

Conclusion - BUY THE BOOK! The absolute winner would be a fifth edition with everything corrected, but until then, it is still a valuable resource for starting C Programming. Just try everything, break it, fix it, comment on the [...] forums, and be a better programmer for it!

Easy way to learn C when others fail you.

Back in 1999 I took a class and C programming and found the process of programming very frustrating and confusing that I became a server engineer. Flash forward to today and I am forced to write a handful of apps for my Unix/Linux team which would save us time on mundane tasks. I picked up this book knowing that C was a major challenge for me in the past and I am very glad I did. This book clearly explains several concepts with which I could not grasp when I was younger and helpful in learning the C language. If you are interested in learning C as novice or if you are frustrated with other C books by all means get this book. There are a few errors but most of them are with function most beginners will not deal with such as memory manipulation.

Since you are reading this review, it means you are looking for a better understanding of Modbus and wish to know if this book would help in that endeavor. How often do you get to have decades of ModBus experience handed to you? Buy the book.
One can tell it is hands on experience. I can tell John has spent many a day in the field with his breakout analyzers saying, 'so you say this is the packet you are sending, now here is what you are really sending'. Been there, done that. After you read his , you too would be able to do that. Buy the book.

This book is a great resource for designers, engineers, and technicians in the automation field since Modbus is used throughout the world and understanding how to apply it is important for any person involved in the automation industry. The author describes the Modbus communications protocol in easy to understand terms and this is why I will wrote the forward for this book. Modbus is used in a wide range of applications including industrial automation, process control, building automation, transportation, energy, and remote monitoring. Virtually any type of sensor and controller devices can be found that incorporates Modbus networking including programmable logic controllers (PLC), process controllers, process instruments, process sensors, PID controllers, motor drives, energy meters, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, programmable automation controllers (PAC), discrete sensors, valves, and many other embedded devices.

An Enchanting Fairy Tale Re-Telling

What an enchanting read! I love a well written fairy tale re-telling and Diane has done a wonderful job with her story of Meriel and her brothers whom are all turned into swans. I really enjoyed being swept away with the classic fairytale aspect of this story. There's magic, danger, a lovely, well written innocent romance, witches and fey lore. Plus I love that it takes a Princess and good hearted towns people to bring down a wicked, evil witch.

Princess Meriel is a fabulously written, strong young female heroine who will everything she can to save her father the King, her brothers and their kingdom from the evil Queen. I loved the transformation she has through out the story. She starts off being a little spoiled, and very stubborn (which I also admired about her) and becomes a fearlessness, courageous Princess who will stop at nothing to help her family. I also admired the fact that she felt she had the right to do whatever her brothers were doing. It's that feistiness that helps Meriel accomplish a nearly impossible task to save her brothers.

Aside from Meriel, I really loved the characters in this story. Liam and Riona, the brother and sister duo who aid Meriel in her quest to save her brothers and break the evil Queen's spell were two of my favorites. I found them to be just as strong as Meriel. I also enjoyed getting to know Mistress Tuileach. I thoroughly enjoyed Diane's exciting story line which is full of surprising twists and turns that kept me guessing what was going to happen next. This is a fabulous read for middle grade readers and for fans of MG books. If you're a fan of fairy tale re-tellings I highly recommend picking up this charming read.

Wonderful Adaptation

Zahler does a magnificent job of reworking this classic tale with a strong female lead. Her language is evocative and poetic, and the story moves along at a rapid clip. I recently read this book to my three children (ages 6, 8 and 11), and received three thumbs up. Better yet, I enjoyed it myself. I highly recommend this book.

Meriel Saves Her Brothers

With this retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Wild Swans," Zahler is becoming the go-to author for middle grade fairy tale retellings. (Well, Zahler and Jessica Day George!) Her previous outings include a retelling of "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" called The Thirteenth Princess and a retelling of Andersen's "The Princess and the Pea" called A True Princess.

As in the other two books, our heroine is a tween, this time 12-year-old Meriel. She and her five older brothers are surprised when the king their father comes home from a journey with a new queen, coldhearted Lady Orianna. The lady is surprised, as well--in the course of her whirlwind (read: calculating) romance, she had not realized her new husband had five sons. This puts a cramp in her plans to have a son and put him on the throne. Orianna transforms the five princes into wild swans, and it is up to Meriel to save them. As you may recall from the original tale, this means Meriel must weave five shirts out of nettles before it's too late. (It's eleven brothers and shirts in Andersen's story, but this is a minor change.) In addition, Meriel must not speak a word while she makes the shirts.

Rather than sending the princess to a foreign land and introducing her to a prince who wants to wed her, as in the original story, the author keeps Meriel around to continue challenging the witchy queen. Fortunately, there are other, nicer witches (or half-witches) around, and they help Meriel. She'll need all the help she can get, especially since the author introduces a new threat--apparently Orianna has been wheeler-dealing with the fay. The ending may be a foregone conclusion, but it's nice to see how Meriel's struggle with the evil queen plays out.

Zahler's retellings are reader-friendly books for the 8-12 crowd with feisty tween heroines whose friends and pluck help them combat the forces of evil. There's a hint of romance for the younger crowd in each one, along with a more serious romance between an older prince or princess and a potential mate (often a worthy commoner). Recommended for fairy tale-mad middle graders, as well as for teens who prefer their retellings without violence and sex.

Socializing Security examines the early movement for worker-security legislation in the United States. They campaigned vigorously for industrial safety laws, workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, and compulsory health insurance.

The AALL reformers were successful in some of their legislative campaigns, but failed in two of their most important ones, those for unemployment insurance and health insurance. In examining the obstacles that the reformers faced, David Moss highlights a variety of political and institutional constraints, including the constitutional doctrine of federalism and gender-biased judicial decisions.

The goal of the AALL reformers, Moss demonstrates, was not to relieve the poor, but rather to prevent workers and their families from falling into poverty as a result of accidents or illness. In favoring security over relief, economists in the progressive era defined and confirmed what has remained, for some eighty years, one of the essential values of American social policy. In concluding, Moss suggests that new policies may now be necessary in an economy in which falling wages and fewer jobs, rather than industrial hazards, are increasingly to blame for the precarious situation of the American worker.

Londres, a�o 2002.

Una ventana al misterio desde mi iPad

La verdad este libro me ha parecido genial. Mas que eso, uno de los mejores que he le�do en mi vida. Encontr� todo lo que estaba buscando desde hace tiempo y no encontraba en un solo libro. La tragedia, la relaci�n con lo divino y lo carnal sin despegar lo uno de lo otro. El misterio, el suspenso... si les gustan las tragedias griegas y les gusta Londres, van a morir por este libro. Y claro, tener a un Dionisio de personaje central es muy estimulante. Gracias Samantha Devin.
