A great book by a very good man

If you want a worms eye view of the grim reality of the WWII Italian campaign then here you go. Bill Mauldin is one of my all time favorite Writers and more importantly Cartoonist. This gritty, humorous book about one of Americas toughest campaigns is one of the best books I have ever read. His story about Patton is worth the price of the book alone. But there is so much more and I don't want to give it away. I can not recommend this book too highly !

The real war

Witty, grim, ironic - Bill Mauldin's "The Brass Ring" is a look at the reality of World War II by a guy who was there. If the men and women in the war were "just doing their job", as many say, then why do so many of us respect them so much? Mauldin's own story does as good a job, I suppose, as any man can do in trying to answer this unanswerable question.

This book can serve a multitude of uses to a multitude of readers: A "sort of" history of WWII; the story of how a young man from humble and poor beginings won a pulitzer prize for editorial cartooning, how an aspiring cartoonist gained national recognition and how other aspiring cartoonists may go about becoming recognized themselves. Highly entertaining with one of the most humorous and climactic endings I have ever had the pleasure to read.

At first, this new sensation was strange to me, even though it filled me with a sort of happiness unknown until then. I wondered if this phenomenon happened only to me, if I was finally going crazy, if I had to seek medical help. But it was so good that it just couldn't be a sickness! I resolved then to deepen my knowledge on the subject, and I came across vast literature that dealt with this kind of spirituality that had flourished in me. I began to understand that I had come into contact with what is called the “Higher Self”, the divine part, the soul, the particle of God that exists in everyone! I noticed that I had received an immense gift from Life as a reward for going after my dreams. For many people this might be incomprehensible or even absurd, which is perfectly natural, because it is not possible to understand something which is unknown. But I have also come to understand that for a growing number of people, the spiritual search is not only an intellectual past time, it is a vital necessity, something that is put into practice and lived day by day. With “The Science of Passion”, I hope to contribute to the search of some of these people, since my greatest dream is to be a channel of Light for my fellow man.

At the age of 27 I experienced a strong existential crisis that made me question the very essence of my being. After walking 800 km and completing a sacred pilgrimage in the heart of Spain, in 1999, my life changed drastically.� I had an ulcer on my cornea which almost made me lose my eyesight, I separated from a relationship of 10 years, I had a mystical experience and wrote "The Science of Passion". This book helped me to understand and overcome many of the hardships and difficulties that accompanied this emotional death and finally it helped my rebirth into a new life in which magic was not just a romantic idea, but the subtle organic fabric life is made of. I never lost the connection to my inner Goddess, which was awakened in those days of my tempestuous quest and then flourished as the greatest blessing of my life through the writing of this book. My wishes and desires were answered and met in ways unimaginable to me before. Paulo Coelho, a renowned writer and a modern prophet, my mentor and a beloved friend, used parts of this book in his novel "Eleven Minutes" which was read worldwide and has been opening many doors for "The Science of Passion" to slowly find its ways into many hearts all over the world. I met the "enchanted prince" I called for in the book and dreamt about for such a long time. He made me discover shades of emotions that I did not even imagine I had in myself, from extreme tenderness to bursting anger, from the heights of lust and mysticism to the valleys of despair and sadness. About this book I can say first of all: WOW!!!

It has been a while since I have come across a book that has made me stay up all night reading, which is exactly what this book did to me. I think one of the charms of the "Science of Passion" is the way you can relate to the connecting thread of humanity in each of us - loneliness (even with a fellow;-), desire to love and be loved, to find the grat love, TRULY live, be happy, understand, etc. - and especially to keep the passion! And I felt that I came across this book at just the right moment in my life (I read it the first time about 3 years ago and it's still a part of my life).

The "Science of Passion" changed my life; it was/is a channel of light for me. It truly touched my heart, my soul; very deeply! The "Science" helped me to see some things clearer and to open my heart and listen to it. I began to observe more, paying attention to EVERYTHING, every moment, every movement, every gesture; I'm more carefully, living more passionate... I see things, I never have seen before; every day, every minute, every second. The book helped me to find my "inner light". While I don't think I can improve on Robin Benson's review, I just want to 'weigh in' and highly recommend this excellent book. It should have many more reviews. Short and sweet, it hits all the high notes and ties up a lot of loose ends. It will help you understand some of the crazy.

Definitely on the right track

If you want to know, as I did, how the ultra-conservatives, religious right and Tea (Taxed Enough Already) Party folk became a significant force in American politics and life Horwitz's book is the one to read. He pulls together the various strands of Right thinking historically but in detail from the 50s and 60s right up to the present.

Central to his analysis is the belief by the Right in American Exceptionalism: the United States is the embodiment of God's gift of freedom and constitutes the greatest earthly force for good the world has known; the universal nature of American values accompany US military ventures abroad and that war was the preferred means to defeat America's external enemies. With this in mind it certainly explains the US's political adventures around the world in the last few decades.

I thought Horwitz's chapter on the Tea Party a very succinct review of their ideology and character. Strong in the mid-west with predominantly aging white males, a dislike of intellectuals and the government though I was surprised to read that the party is in favor of government entitlements like Social Security and Medicare but for themselves: the deserving and responsible.

Considering the book is only 210 pages (but with another 70 for Notes and Index) I think the author packs in a huge amount of fascinating detail and nicely his style of writing is mostly jargon free making the book a stimulating read.

About the Author

Donald A. Ritchie is historian of the U.S. Senate, where he conducts an oral history program. A past president of the Oral History Association, he has also served on the councils of the International Oral History Association and the American Historical Association. He is the author of many books, including Doing Oral History: A Practical Guide (OUP, 2003), Reporting from Washington (OUP, 2005) and The U.S. Congress: A Very Short Introduction (OUP, 2010).

A must have!

This is the best oral history book I have by far. It is well written, thoughtful and provacative. I am in a very difficult oral history class and without this book I would be lost.
