Glenn Hubbard policymaker, professor, and researcher.

R.Glenn Hubbard is the Dean and Russell L. Carson Professor of Finance and Economics in the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University and Professor of Economics in Columbia’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He is also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a director of Automatic Data Processing, Black Rock Closed-End Funds, Dex Media, Duke Realty, KKR Financial Corporation, and Ripplewood Holdings. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1983. From 2001—2003, he served as Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, and from 1991—1993, he was Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department. Glenn Hubbard’s fields of specialization are public economics, financial markets and institutions, corporate finance, macroeconomics, industrial organization, and public policy. He is the author of more than 90 articles in leading journals, including the American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Public Economics, Quarterly Journal of Economics, RAND Journal of Economics, and Review of Economics and Statistics. His research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and numerous private foundations.

Anthony Patrick O’Brien is a professor of economics at Lehigh University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1987. He has taught principles of economics for more than 15 years, in both large sections and small honors classes. He received the Lehigh University Award for Distinguished Teaching. He was formerly the director of the Diamond Center for Economic Education and was named a Dana Foundation Faculty Fellow and Lehigh Class of 1961 Professor of Economics. He has been a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University. Anthony O’Brien’s research has dealt with such issues as the evolution of the U.S. automobile industry, the sources of U.S. economic competitiveness, the development of U.S. trade policy, the causes of the Great Depression, and the causes of black—white income differences. His research has been published in leading journals, including the American Economic Review, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Industrial Relations, and the Journal of Economic History. His research has been supported by grants from government agencies and private foundations. In addition to teaching and writing, Anthony O’Brien also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Socio-economics.

Purchased instead of 4th edition

There's not much difference in the chapters (just rearrangement of where the different chapter topics are) so if you get this one instead of the newest edition, just be sure to check (& double-check) that you're reading the right topics before your lectures.

Pretty straightforward book. Not too hard to read, surprisingly. If your class doesn't require some online access or code, I would highly recommend just getting this book. (Ignore what professors & publishers or whoever tell you, try not to get the newest edition unless completely in need of the content/accessories that comes with it bc they're just a waste of your money.)

Happy with this purchase! Less than $1 for my book, whoohoo!~

One of the best APEX books I’ve ever worked with. Highly Recommended

Before I briefly discuss the content of the book, the reason I highly recommend this book to those who want to learn APEX is because it has been written by an author who has both a passion for & a track record in teaching database theory to students. This comes out in every page of the book and stimulates the reader. Each chapter can be thought of one of a series of lectures in APEX with loads of useful information all aimed at not just building an application, but at giving you the understanding of the many configuration options within the development environment. It must not be thought of as a simple tutorial containing a set of steps for building an application. While there are some excellent books that use this style, this book encourages deeper understanding & can be used prior to moving on to a more complex tutorial style book. The book is a superb foundation for studying & learning APEX application development.

The backbone of the book is an application called The Employee Database which holds HR – type records & provides the reader with a focus for their study & experimentation. Starting off with instruction on how to obtain a free APEX account, the book then discusses & encourages the reader to learn how to create a range of different database front-end features such as input forms, reports & graphs, as well as how to configure them to maximum effect. The coding ability within APEX is exploited to provide real power & all code needed is provided & explained within the book’s covers. To round off, the reader will learn how to implement a security scheme as well as how to avoid some common weaknesses such as cross-code scripting & SQL injection. Not something many other titles cover.

In conclusion if you would like a thorough book that forces you to think as you learn rather than just instructs, this is most certainly the book for you.

Really effective way to master APEX

The previous version of this book was the key ingredient in my APEX learning strategy and I am currently reading this new version to gain more insight and get up to speed on APEX 5.

The biggest challenge I find with APEX is understanding how the various pieces fit together so you can figure out where to look for a particular setting or where to look to track down a bug in your app. This book has what I think is the ideal strategy for helping you up this learning curve:

The book starts by helping you wrap your mind around the major elements of an APEX application: pages, regions, and items. The focus of the book is on understanding how these pieces fit together into a logical framework. Which means that as I went through the book I began to build my own mental model of how APEX works. I cannot stress enough how important this is: your SQL code is just a small piece of your application's design and you need to a clear mental model to understand where your code lives, when it runs, and how it interacts with all the other parts of APEX that are defined using its GUI.

Another thing I like about the book is the approach to examples. Yes, it is cool to have a book build some really impressive application as you walk through but then it becomes harder to dip into the book at random points to learn specific skills and have the example make as much sense. By using a series of small, ad hoc examples, each section of the book stands alone and you can read through the example to understand the specific thing being explained. The fact that the examples make use of the sample tables that ship with APEX makes it easy to quickly try something out without needing to have followed along an entire process of building an example. (Note: there is one change you need to make in the example, which the author describes in Chapter 1: adding an additional column to the EMP table, and this would be worth doing at the outset.)

One other aspect of the book I would like to highlight: while this book assumes no prior knowledge of APEX it does assume you are interested in pushing this tool as far as you can. The book includes some examples of more advanced techniques like the use of dynamic SQL to increase the interactivity of reports. You can easily skip over this stuff to focus on learning the basics, which are presented really clearly, but when you are ready to explore where you can go with APEX this more advanced stuff points the way. I find it quite unusual and welcome to have both these levels available in a book that is just over 300 pages.

The result is a very accessible, very readable, and very practical guide to APEX. Highly recommended!

Quick aside: as the book itself makes clear, the book is not intended as an introduction to SQL or databases. You should go elsewhere for that. But once you have a basic grasp of SQL and know just a bit of HTML (the very basics) then this is *the* first place I would go to start learning APEX.

Nikolay Voutchkov, PE, BCEE, is with Water Globe Consulting, LLC where he provides independent technical advisory services in the desalination field to public utilities and private consulting companies and investors in the U.S.A. and abroad. With more than 30 years of professional experience, 14 as a Board Certified Environmental Engineer, Mr. Voutchkov has completed a wide range of engineering, planning, and applied research projects in the field of desalination, conventional water supply, wastewater treatment, and reuse. Between 1998 and 2009, he was a Chief Technology Officer for Poseidon Resources, a private company specializing in the development of large water infrastructure/desalination projects. Mr. Voutchkov is the author of Desalination Engineering: Planning and Design.

Very good and practical operation manual

Due to our geographical location and climate, in Spain we suffer severe water scarcity and an irregular, unpredictable climate that even reaches desertification in some areas. Therefore we have been dealing water availability with coordinated actions covering surface and subsurface water resources management, water sanitation, water treatment, desalination and reuse.

That means to invest heavily in hydraulic infrastructures which are meant to ensure the necessary water resources, regardless of the weather conditions. Over the last years, desalination has been one of our main investment programmers (12 RO plants with more than 1.000.000 cubic meters per day) as this technology has notably increased its efficiency and competitiveness thanks to technological improvements incorporated within the process and to the international leadership of the Spanish companies in the sector.

But nothing of this would be possible without a sound plant operation knowledge oriented to fulfill our business objectives: Satisfy users' water needs; Maximize operations' efficiency and quality; Prevent the environmental impact of our actions; Contribute to economic growth and environmental improvement of the regions where we operate.

From our experience the book has been a great surprise as it includes comprehensive explanations about all operational aspects of desalination plants, from the first step to the last, covering in one book all the process involved. This volume is a must-have for any desalination or reverse osmosis (RO) plant.

From my perspective as Operations Manager of a large scale desalination plant, this eagerly awaited reference text is an important tool for industry and of practical use in all technical aspects of operational activities, from training to process troubleshooting and equipment maintenance. It encompasses the full range of variability in RO plant design and therefore has applicability across industry while complementing its predecessor "Desalination Engineering: Planning and Design".

Voutchkov continues to be a key contributor on an international scale to the dissemination of information in the water industry and in particular the areas of RO and desalination.

Finding this difficult to understand

Disappointed with the grammar, and the formatting of the questions. The content seems substantial enough that I can figure it out having studied other CPA prep programs. I would not place the likelihood of my passing grade on using just this program but it will definitely help in conjunction with other studying.

Excellent resource!

I purchased this book over the summer after having been extremely frustrated with a painfully unorganized and overall nasty experience I had with a review course (rhymes with BALL) that I had enrolled in months earlier. I recently passed my exam and am happy to say that the most useful resource available to me was this book. This book hits on all the major subjects in a very organized and concise manner, and really the only adjunct material necessary would be the practice bulletins available through ACOG. I highly recommend this book, you will not be displeased!

The only book you need

I just passed my exam on the first attempt with the help of this review book. Other review books are outdated and they often lack references. This review book references the ACOG compendium as well as recent published studies. My recommendation is to use this book with the ACOG compendium and use these two to review all topics covered on the boards. I just wish I had bought this book before spending money on other sources that were outdated!

Excellent review book to pass the boards.

I recently have taken and passed my oral board exam, and after reviewing this book I was impressed with its comprehensive approach to preparing for the oral boards. It does an excellent job integrating cases into its preparation which is the style of the exam. The book even describes the testing day experience in great detail. This book is definitely worth the small investment. Highly recommended.
